The U-Shaped Staircase in the Back Bay
A U-SHAPED STAIRCASE
To assist us with the building process and figuring out all the little details, we’re using a template on the floor in the lower level outlining the U-shaped staircase. While we are working in the unit, the staircase is actually being fabricated off-site. This presents an obvious challenge: it’s stressful to build a finished piece in the shop—like a custom staircase—and then expect it to fit perfectly into the space we have built here.
The plan is to build the staircase in as few pieces as possible—likely three—and then attempt not to break the curve. Going up to the floor above and looking down into the staircase opening, it’s pretty impressive—the framing and all the details coming together to make this unique staircase. Every decision we make on our jobs is done with full intention and careful planning. And it always pays off!
LEAKS IN THE ROOF DECK
Up on the roof deck, Tim explains what is going on with the ripped off deck boards. Signs of leaks were observed in the garage below, so we engaged in a little exploratory demo to try to find out if there are leaks in the partial living space just below. Overall, we found the roof wasn’t in horrible condition, but we did find a few leaks. Now we have to figure out what to do next—New roof? New deck? Is there enough pitch or drains? Lots to work out, share our findings with the client, propose options, and ultimately let the client decide what direction to go in.
