Waterproof Plaster Walls and The Floating Fireplace
WATERPROOF PLASTER WALLS
It’s been quite a process to get to this stage in the primary bathroom. The waterproof plaster walls and ceiling are done—the guys at Van Gerven Plastering used a Develime product called Liquid Marble, and it took about six or seven coats to achieve the desired final finish. We are excited to get the homeowner’s approval on the color and then we’ll seal the walls next week. Even our TRUFIG plates got the Liquid Marble treatment so they will blend seamlessly into the walls. But creating the exact color for these walls and shower was no easy task—it’s more like a science project, literally using syringes of various sizes, mixing colors based on formula calculations, and creating samples. And the experts at Van Gerven nailed it!
THE FLOATING FIREPLACE
This fireplace is epic—it appears as if it is one colossal concrete cube just floating off the floor! Here’s how we achieved this stylistic centerpiece: We used a ½-inch reveal off of the floor all the way around the fireplace and similarly with the ceiling. And from the ceiling, we actually dropped that reveal down slightly more because that is the heat release for the fireplace—the excess heat will flow out of the top opening and into the room. And where the fireplace meets the walls, we added a reveal to separate it from the wall. All of this creates the illusion that the “concrete” fireplace is floating above the oak floor and not touching the walls. Very cool!
